Sweet Potato Vine

Ipomoea batatas

Sweet potato vine makes a beautiful, dependable addition to your summer garden. These undemanding plants thrive in the intense heat of our summers, require average garden soil and regular water. In the past 15 years, interest has soared and new cultivars with new characteristics are making sweet potato vine more versatile than ever. Use as a low-growing bedding plant, summer ground cover, in hanging baskets and other containers or trained to climb a support. The colorful foliage is the big show. Potato vine do their best in six or more hours of direct sun. They will grow in shadier conditions, but will not be as vigorous.
